Discover Harry's Seafood, Bar & Grille

Walking down the historic stretch near the bay, the first time I stepped into Harry's Seafood, Bar & Grille, it felt like slipping into a lively Southern dining room where food, conversation, and tradition all collide. Located at 46 Avenida Menendez, St. Augustine, FL 32084, United States, this spot has become a familiar name among locals and travelers who crave bold flavors without any pretense. I’ve eaten here on busy weekends and quieter weekday afternoons, and the experience stays consistent in a way that builds trust fast.

The menu leans heavily into Creole and Southern-inspired cooking, which isn’t always easy to pull off outside Louisiana. Yet here, the process is thoughtful and rooted in technique. Dishes like jambalaya and shrimp and grits follow a classic base: slow-simmered stocks, layered spices, and careful timing. A former line cook I spoke with during one visit mentioned that sauces are built from scratch daily, not reheated shortcuts, which lines up with what you taste on the plate. The gumbo, in particular, reflects that attention; the roux is dark and nutty, cooked patiently rather than rushed. It’s the kind of detail that food science researchers from institutions like the Culinary Institute of America often point to when explaining why depth of flavor matters more than flashy presentation.

On one visit, I watched a nearby table react to their first bite of crab cakes with that shared look that says worth the hype. Those reactions echo what you’ll see across many online reviews, where guests often highlight portion size and seasoning balance. According to National Restaurant Association data, over 70% of diners say consistency is the top reason they return to a restaurant. That statistic makes sense here. Whether it’s a weekday lunch or a packed holiday dinner, the kitchen seems dialed in.

The bar side of the experience adds another layer. Bartenders move fast but stay personable, mixing cocktails that match the food’s personality. Their bourbon-based drinks pair especially well with the rich, savory notes coming from the kitchen. One bartender explained their approach as simple drinks done right, which fits the overall vibe. Nothing feels over-engineered, yet nothing feels careless either.

Location matters too. Being steps away from the waterfront makes it an easy stop between sightseeing and evening plans. I’ve recommended this place to visiting friends more than once because it works for different moods. Families, couples, and solo diners all blend into the room without anyone feeling out of place. That versatility shows professional understanding of hospitality, something experts in service management often emphasize as a long-term success factor.

Not every dish will suit every palate, and that’s worth saying. The spice levels, while flavorful, may surprise guests expecting mild seafood fare. Servers are usually good about flagging heat and offering adjustments, but it helps to ask. Transparency like that builds credibility, and it’s clear the staff is trained to communicate rather than upsell blindly.

Across multiple visits, what stands out most is how the restaurant balances energy with reliability. From menu execution to service flow, there’s a sense of practiced rhythm. Reviews frequently mention friendly staff and quick turnaround times, and those observations line up with what I’ve experienced firsthand. While trends in dining shift constantly, places that understand their identity tend to endure, and this one shows a clear grasp of who it is and who it serves.

Eating here feels less like chasing a trend and more like participating in a well-honed routine that respects both the food and the guest, grounded in real cooking methods, honest service, and a location that naturally draws people together.

  • Went to a soft opening in early September and the place is awesome! Food, service, and ambiance is all very good. Being on Lake Okahumpka is a plus as you can see sunsets & the occasional gator. Bar is very cool with about 50 seats with views of the TV’s! Check it out! There will be a wait so be patient as it is worth it!

  • Our recent visit to Harry's Seafood Bar and Grille for my man birthday was exceptional, starting with our incredible server, Melanie, who made the whole experience effortless and five-star worthy. We started strong with the appetizers: the rich, smoky gumbo and the fish dip - they were both amazing! For the main event, the Crab Crusted Redfish Royale was a truly luxurious indulgence. The delicate, flaky redfish was topped with a generous, savory crab crust that was absolute perfection. My partner’s Andouille Grouper was equally dynamic, featuring a beautifully prepared fillet with the robust, spicy kick of Andouille sausage. Harry's delivers expertly crafted seafood and true New Orleans flair. We'll be talking about this meal for months! Overall Rating: 5/5 Stars Recommended Dishes: Crab Crusted Redfish Royale, Andouille Grouper, Gumbo

  • 1st time at Harry's, Monday lunch! The place was packed, as expected during Night of Lights tourist traffic (including me & my husband ) Melissa was our server and she was most helpful in helping us choose our dishes, verifying some ingredients and such. We loved the eggplants with crab meat, it was such a tasty appetizer! I had a seafood evangeline which was the special of the day which was ok, wouldn't say it was special, the portion was so huge though. My husband had the rare seared tuna and he really enjoyed it thoroughly. It was a very chill day for us, we had late breakfast and I think that made the 45 minute wait between our appetizers and entree more tolerable, however if you get hangry I wouldn't recommend visiting during peak times or the waiting time might kill you I'd be down to come back and try other dishes. Nice & accommodating staff always makes the experience better.

  • Wow. It’s been a long time since I’ve been wholly impressed by a restaurant. Every single thing about this place was amazing. Service, ambiance, food were all 10/10. There is not one complaint to be made. The hostess who sat us was so sweet and very accommodating to our large stroller for our son. Our server Daniel had what could only be best described as charisma, he was not over the top pushy yet was still completely attentive and subtly funny. It felt like we had an inside joke with him (over what I can’t tell you but it’s like we had our friend serving us). He checked in just enough that we didn’t feel neglected but also never felt over bothered. On top of that when we sat down it seemed the whole restaurant did as well. But the staff didn’t let us see them sweat. Honestly we were so shocked to see how cohesive they moved to get tables serviced. If you’re wondering no we have no personal connection. We are simply on a family road trip and we always stay in Saint Augustine. Can’t believe this is our first time here because pretty sure it’s the only restaurant we’re going to eat at when we visit.

  • Very good food. Tasted like authentic Louisiana cuisine. The fried green tomatoes are a must. Gumbo and she crab soups were both great. Our server was kind of weird. Never got to try the banana crème brûlée though because the server simply gave us the bill instead of asking if we wanted desserts. We were like oh well. Outside tables were pretty, but inside tables were pretty depressing.

  • First time experience was exceptional! I had the shrimp and scallops orleans, everything was prepared well and fantastic, and my wife had the fried shrimp and grouper with red beans and rice and sweet corn grits. She enjoyed every bite! My meal included grits cakes, which I don't normally care for, and these were delicious! We had the butter pecan cheesecake for dessert, and I would have paid the cost of the meal for that cheesecake.

  • ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “Fish tacos, history, and a balcony view worth every calorie!” If you go to Harry’s in St. Augustine, do yourself a favor — sit on the balcony! You get this postcard-perfect view of the waterfront and the Lions Bridge, right next to El Castillo de San Marcos. It’s like dinner and a history lesson with seasoning! Our server Jeremy from Indianapolis was awesome — he just moved to Florida and already delivering 5-star service. (Good luck out here, buddy, just wait till you meet Florida humidity ). We found this spot on TikTok, and for once, TikTok didn’t lie! The calamari was crispy, the fish tacos were , and yes… I ordered a hamburger at a seafood place. I know, I know — but don’t judge me, the burger was legit! Between the view, the food, and the vibe, I left full, happy, and slightly jealous of Jeremy’s new job location. 10/10 — would definitely go back (and maybe even try something that actually swims next time).
